Device Sheets

NavroopS , 05-13-2020, 03:02 AM
1) I have some circuits( 3 altium sheets) that will used in various designs . Rather than creating same schematics on every board , I was thinking if there is feature that we can link same schematics on various projects. I am doing device sheets but not sure if I am doing it right. Also is there any video or instructions doing this kind of implementation.
2) I have created sheet symbols using sheets. When i place them on top sheet , it comes with Port entries. What is the way to create sheet symbols without ports as Robert does on his designs as shown in attached in pic 3. For time being I manually deleted the ports , and then with selecting option " Automatic ( based on project contents) " it doesn't make port connections from one sheet to another. If I choose Global , then it makes connection. Just checking what is correct way of doing it.

you should look into snippits.. that is basically what you need to do this.

Maybe @Shivvrm could help you? He was working with sheets: https://designhelp.fedevel.com/forum...-device-sheets

Hi NavroopS ,

1. Device sheets are always better in data management in case of hierarchical design in comparison to sheet symbols. Though they seem to be doing the same work but they represent different scenario. For ex. You use device sheets when a circuit can be reused in multiple different projects. You use sheet symbols when a circuit can be used multiple times in a single project. For a sheet symbol to work it should be residing in the same project. It is not the same with device sheets. So if you have a circuit that can be used in multiple different designs. You are good to go with device sheets . Read this for more details https://www.altium.com/documentation...vice-sheets-ad

2 . If you want a sheet symbol to connect without the sheet entries you need to change the net identifier scope to Global. As "Automatic" detects that you have a hierarchical design and connects your net labels according to that net identifier scope. But a "Global" net identifier scope doesn't care about any hierarchy. It directly detects all the net labels and if they are same they get connected. No matter if it is a net label or port or sheet entries. But I would not recommend using global scope in hierarchical designs as it is difficult to maintain and check the interconnectivity between the nets. Read this to know more about how Altium uses net identifier scope to connect the nets https://www.altium.com/documentation...d?version=18.1
