Shielded Cable Design for High Speed BLDC motor.

Izak , 01-20-2025, 01:21 PM
Hi everyone. I recently saw Robert's interview with Karen Burnham about cable shielding and I have a few questions. Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj-HVve1QC4&t=1967s I am designing a shielded cable for a high speed (80 000 rpm) bldc motor for a medical device. I am at a crossroads currently, because I am not sure whether I should ground the shield to a DC ground plane or to the chassis of the device. Furthermore, I need to limit any leakge current to under 50uA. The cable design I have in mind is to have a double spiral shield. Would there be any benefits to ground the shielding of the cable to 2 separate grounds, thus EARTH and GND or to connect them to the same ground/earth. Should I also ground at both ends or only at the console? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

For a motor, you connect the shield at both ends.
As for the 50uA leakage, that is something different than EMC.
